1.2 Differences in political beliefs of the new generation
and discrimination in the justice process and political
injustice: the prosecution of political protesters
Background
Since 2020, there have been large political rallies involving various
groups in society, especially the new generation or youth groups with
significant demands, including the resignation of General Prayut Chan-o-cha
from the position of prime minister, a complete overhaul of the constitution,
and reform of the monarchy. These movements and their demands have
caused unprecedented disruptions in Thai society leading to violent
protests resulting in the prosecution of over 2,000 protesters and protest
leaders. Prosecutions related to these protests are commonly referred
to as “political cases”, driven with political purposes. Society has started
to question the “irregularities” in the judicial process associated with
lawsuits related to these rallies. These irregularities include prosecuting
individuals on serious charges, prolonged detention of the accused,
and the denial of bail."
