Fire. The incident took place after a group of men launched attacks on
military and police checkpoints in Yala, Pattani, and Songkhla on the early
morning of April 28, 2004. One of these locations was the Ban Krue Se
Checkpoint in Tanyong Lulo Subdistrict, Mueang Pattani District, Pattani
Province. Attackers fled to the Krue Se Mosque, where people were
at prayer. Soldiers and police surrounded the mosque before deciding
to end the incident by force, resulting in more than 30 deaths at the
scene in addition to others through the area, with a total of 109 deaths.
At the end of 2012, under a Pheu Thai Party government, the Southern
Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC) provided compensation
to the families of the 109 deceased in the Krue Se incident. Among the
victims, there were two government officials. The total compensation
was 302 million baht.
Between theories and reality, some government officials who are not
armed on duty believe that the root cause of the unrest is “injustice” and
“inequality” causing hatred among many local people. In fact, a fair justice
process must be easy, convenient, safe, and economical. The question
of safety is raised when entering the justice process. Compensation of
4 million and 7 million is not a cure. Bringing the officials responsible for
violations to trial is the real remedy.
