as a security concern. Consequently, it becomes necessary to grant the
government full authority to address fake news, especially during times
of political conflict when fake news can spread rapidly and extensively
through social media. The state should issue stricter regulations and
enforce laws “in the name of security.” Such actions pose a risk to
people's rights and liberty in free speech, gradually shrinking rights and
liberties and giving way to a focus on security.
Suggestions
Legislation to regulate fake news is just one approach to address
the issue. There are numerous other methods, including media literacy
education, fact-checking points, improving the quality of mass media,
and responsible technology development. While amending or enacting
additional laws may give the state more power, it also raises concerns
about people's rights and liberty. Therefore, addressing fake news
in Thailand should not solely involve amending or enacting laws to
empower the state to “maintain stability.” There is no guarantee that
the state will use its power to manage fake news properly. Instead,
it should be a collaborative effort involving all sectors, both the government
and society, to find a balanced and effective approach to tackle fake
news without infringing on people's rights and liberty.
