นอกจากปฏิญญา UDHR แล้ว ยังปรากฏว่ามีตราสารระหว่างประเทศ
อีกหลายฉบับ ทั้งในระดับสากลและระดับภูมิภาค ที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับการเคารพ
ศักดิ์ศรีแห่งความเป็นมนุษย์และการคุ้มครองบุคคลจากการทรมานและการกระทำา
ให้บุคคลสูญหาย อย่างไรก็ดี ผู้วิจัยจะกล่าวถึงเฉพาะตราสารสิทธิมนุษยชน
ระหว่างประเทศที่ประเทศไทยได้เข้าเป็นภาคีหรือที่ได้เข้าลงนามแล้ว ประกอบด้วย
1. กติการะหว่างประเทศว่าด้วยสิทธิพลเรือนและสิทธิทางการเมือง
(International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights –
กติกา ICCPR) เข้าเป็นภาคีเมื่อวันที่ 29 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2539

2. อนุสัญญาต่อต้านการทรมาน และการปฏิบัติหรือการลงโทษอื่น
ที่โหดร้าย ไร้มนุษยธรรม หรือที่ยำ่ายีศักดิ์ศรี (Convention against
Torture and Other Inhuman or Degrading Treatment
or Punishment – อนุสัญญา CAT) เข้าเป็นภาคีเมื่อวันที่
