International Organizations’ Role on Peace Process and Some Perspectives on Southern Thailand’s Future
Recommendations
1. The government delegation should propose to the dissident groups, through the
good office of the facilitator, to form a more inclusive coalition to enter into peace dialogue.
Such coalition could use a name that is slightly different from the existing name of MARA
Patani. One suggestion is BARA Patani, with the replacement of letter M (abbreviation of Majlis,
meaning Council, in MARA) being by letter B (abbreviation of Barisan, meaning Front, in BRN).
This is to entice a higher level of participation and commitment of BRN.
2. In order to brighten the prospect of Peace Dialogue Process, it is necessary to
assiduously continue the process with the support of all actors. It is recommended that there
should be a space for free, open and continuing deliberation on various issues as well as
capacity building activities for all of the partners, be they local or international actors, in the
peace process and in the Peace Dialogue Process.
3. Thai government should allow a greater participation of international actors to
accompany the dialogue and to provide capacity building to both government and dissident
interlocutors. There should be a wider dissemination of information on issues related to peace
process such as the respect of humanitarian principle, truth seeking, healing, restoration of
relationship in communities affected by protracted conflict, transitional justice.
4. International actors should be in a position to provide theorical and empirical
knowledge about peace processes in other places as well as mediator skill for dialogue to
various actors.
5. In case of violent conflict here or elsewhere, media could play important roles either
to promote peace or to impede peace process. Therefore, knowledge about Peace Dialogue
Process should be imparted to media people. It is also important to encourage them to make
faithful and creative reporting of the conflict.
