Democracy: An Interpretation
In 2005, the Asian Barometer Survey assessed the quality of
democracy in the Philippines. The survey findings consisting of indices
related to the concept and practice of democracy as reported in the graph
below, show that the country scored low in the areas of government’s
responsiveness, adherence to the law and control of corruption, political
efficacy, and electoral participation. This is despite the findings that show a
socio-political environment that promotes high levels of equality, freedom,
accountability, competitiveness, and political interest.
