change of political sides. In the previous election, there was high competition between 2
families which were Sanpong and Boonyakiat. In this election, however, 2 families
competing were changed to Boonyakiat and Dechdecho. This was because for
Boonyakiat family, Mr. Pichai was the former Chief Executive of the PAO. In the same
way, for Dechdecho family, Ms. Kanokporn Dechdecho was the former member of the
PAO Council and she is also the wife of Mr. Witoon Dechdecho who was the former
Chief Executive of the PAO for 3 terms. Moreover, in this election the network of local
politicians and local politicians such as the former Chief Executives of the PAO, Chief
Executives of subdistrict administration organizations, mayors, subdistrict headmen and
village headmen had an important role as the canvassers and bastion for the candidates
of Members of the PAO Council and Chief Executive of the PAO. This caused 763,161 of
1,200,951 voters to have attentiveness and be interested to vote Chief Executive of the
PAO or 63.55%. The number of voters increased 12.45% in this election compared to
the previous election which had 51.10% of the voters. For the election of Members of
the PAO Council, there were 760,600 of 1,191,951 voters or 84.637%.
2. Relationship between national and local politics: From site visit to interview
people who had political interest, canvassers and people in Nakhon Si Thammarat
Province, it found that the candidates for Chief Executive of the PAO and Members of
the PAO Council mostly had the relationship with the national political parties in the
informal way. They were not directly under the parties but they were related to the
members of those national parties. There were 6 candidates who had the relationship
like this as follows:
No. 1 Mr. Amnuay Yuttitham—He is the brother of Mr. Sayan Yuttitjam, Member
of the House of Representative from Palangpracharath Party.
No.2 Ms. Kanokporn Dechdecho—She is the mother of Mr. Chaichana
Dechdecho, Member of the House of Representative from Democrat Party. She was also
supported by Members of the House of Representative from Democrat Party, namely Mr.
Tepthai Sanpong, Ms. Pimpattra Wichaikul and Mr. Prakop Rattanapan.
No.3 Mr. Anan Thong-Un—He is very close to Ms. Huwaideeya Useng (Pitsuwan),
former Member of the House of Representative from Democrat Party.
No.4 Mr. Isara Hassadin—He was the candidate from Progressive Movement
supported by Mr. Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit.
