Concepts and Theories
This study used the rational choice theory which is based on the idea that decision
making in various activities in human life, including the decision to vote, comes from logical
reflection and information that they received thoroughly whether the qualifications of candidates,
the beliefs or ideology of candidates as well as the policies of the party of candidates. Reason for
choosing this theory is due to political context, economical context and societal context of this
election are different from previous elections. Past elections we can use the party identification
concept for explaining why Democrat Party have long been monopolized by all constituencies of
Songkhla province.
Result
The political activities and voting behavior in general election March 24, 2019 in Song-
khla province were different from previous elections. Resulting in a major political change when
the Democrat Party lost its seat from 8 seats to only 3 seats. Palangpracharath Party (PPRP),
the new party which supporting General Prayut Chan-o-cha to be Prime Minister after election,
won 4 seats and the last seat belong to Bhumjaithai Party (BJT). The details are as follows.
1. Political context, this election used the MMA electoral system for the first time has
attracted more than 30 candidates in each constituency, a total of 269 candidates that were highest
record ever more than any elections before because political parties need points to be counted for
party-list MPs. Meanwhile the 2011 election, there were only 31 candidates in all constituencies.
The large number of candidates is consistence with explaining of rational choice theory in
the issue of the choice that voter have large number of choices for decision making. In addition,
several political parties fought vigorously competing in hopes of winning the election, different from
previous elections. Because assessed that The Democrat Party should not be able to dominate the
popularity as closely as in the past because there are many factors that affect the party, causing
the boredom to the Democrat Party, such as former MPs not showing the role to represent the
people or presenting problems to the Prayut government especially the economic problems with
agricultural product prices fall such as rubber, palm oil; lack of unity in the Democrat Party both
at the national level after the party leader election competition and at the local level that there
