                                      Background

Siam and Japan have long maintained a strong bond from the
Ayutthaya period to the Rattanakosin period, or the Ryukyu Kingdom
in Japan. Many pieces of evidence including historical documents and

antiquities can chronologically present the close friendship between
the two royal families based on these two following periods.

                    The first period, the Ayutthaya period (1425 A.D. – 1767 A.D.)

Trades between Ayutthaya Kingdom and Japan were mentioned
on both eastern and western historical documents: Korean historical

documents, Chinese Chronicles of Ming Dynasty’s, Tocharians or Tokharians
                                                                           1
Manuscripts, Spanish maritime reports, documents of Dutch East

East India Company, Du Royaume de Siam by Simon de La Loubère,
and A Relation of the Voyage to Siam: performed by six Jesuits sent by
the French king, to the Indies and China in the year 1685 and Second

                    Voyage by Guy Tachard.

1 The Tocharians were speakers of Tocharian languages, Indo-European languages,
found on the northern edge of the Tarim Basin now is Xinjiang, China.
