Group Discussion 1: Legal System
and Social Justice Enhancement
In an independent state with democracy, the
law is considered as one of the important tools for
bridging the inequality gap and nurturing quality of
democracy. Fair laws and fair enforcement will create
justice in society; on the other hand, unfair laws and poor
law enforcement may contribute to increasing inequality in
society, such as the provision to preserve the forests
regardless of the people living in the area, or legislation to
serve some certain groups of people. Unfair law enforcement
gives priority to some groups of people while obstructing other
groups of people from accessing the justice system, creating
inequality under the same law.
Therefore, a good legal system must allow people to participate
in development of legislation, so the process of drafting laws should
include soliciting public opinions to truly reflect the voice of the public.
Enforcement of good laws must ensure that the rights of all people are
protected equally. A justice system must allow all people access. The most
important expectation is to bridge the inequality gap of people in society and
enhance social justice.
