Group Discussion 1
Social
Phenomena
and
Changes
in
Political
Parties
Various modern social phenomena such as the evolution of
technology, the rise of social media, new social movements, and
populist politics have given rise to new political parties such as
the Spanish party “Podemos”, and the Italian party “The Five
Star Movement-M5S”, which was based in a social movement
and then expand into a populist party. This social phenomena is
changing the roles and forms of political parties. A party not
only acts as an organization, but also participates in social
movements. At the same time, traditional political parties face
the challenge of how to survive and adapt in order to respond
to voters.
This discussion will address social phenomena and changes
in political parties in two dimensions. First, the formation and
activities of political parties, and how to respond to people and
stakeholders in a changing political landscape will be considered.
Second, how the populist movement remodels the political
landscape and democracy at national and international levels will
be considered.
Main topics:
1) Social phenomena and political parties.
2) Adaptation of political parties and its response toward
people.
3) Populism and challenges facing political parties.
4) Direction of populism and people’s politics as new
political movements.
