Abstract
The objective of this research is to develop indicators for social media literacy of youths for
citizenship in a democratic society. The word “youth” in this research means young people
between 15-24 years of age. This study use qualitative methods including documentary research,
theoretical synthesis, and interviews with expert informants. The result of the study categorized
social media literacy indicators in to two groups: receiving information and sending information.
Indicators for “receiving information” consist of skill for selecting information and political media
by using diverse sources, the skill for analysis and evaluation enabling individuals to separate
fact from opinions, analyze reliable information, and realize civic duty by making complaints with
relevant agencies when someone breaks the law. For “receiving information” indicators consist
of creating skills that enable individuals to appropriately present information relevant to objectives
and content, individuals participate in social media by respecting other’s opinions, care for
reasonable argument, using peaceful language, beware of insulting other people , share or
present useful information, aware of rights, civic duty and responsible by not using one’s computer
to trespass on other people, create false evidence, or infringe on computer copyright, and concern
for potential consequences to society from their actions. This study has 25 indicators in total (8
receiving information indicators and 17 sending information indicators).
