ประชาธิปไตยในภูมิทัศน์ใหม่
If South Korean citizens have realigned their regime support, how has it
changed over time? Figure 23.3 shows changes in the varieties of regime
supporters between 1996 and 2018. As anticipated from Figure 2, the most
significant change has taken place in full democrats, whose proportion has dropped
from 58% to 19%. About two-thirds of the full democrats (29%) have shifted their
regime orientations away from democracy and towards authoritarianism over the last
three decades. Where have they gone? The largest gain is found in those of
hybrids. In particular, there are 16% and 9% increases in strongman rule hybrids
and full hybrids, respectively. On the side of authoritarian types, strongman
autocrats gained 8% from 1996 to 2018. There are only minor changes of less
than 4% in the remaining types: military hybrids, military autocrats, full autocrats,
and apathets.
