Abstract
This work, entitled “The Study of Political Movements and Electoral
Behaviors of the 2019 General Election in Chiang Mai Province,” is a qualitative research
study. The research is aimed at examining and expounding the political context, political
behaviors of political parties and politicians, the political parties’ processes for selecting
candidates to run for election to the House of Representatives, and factors influencing
the decision to become a political party member and to run for election as MP on behalf
of the political parties in Chiang Mai constituencies. Another objective of this study is to
comprehend the direction, methods, and means of resource mobilization required for the
electioneering competition while attempting to analyze changes in people’s behavior, local
political groups, and the election campaigns of the MP candidates in Chiang Mai Province.
This research study collected data concerning local areas, undertook document
research, and conducted interviews with key informants involved in the election process,
including MP candidates, executives of political parties, members of political parties,
community leaders, local administrators, government officials at a regional level, and
eligible voters. The result of the study shows that the political context in which the
government’s supervision is prominent gives rise to restrictions on campaigning for
candidates and political parties. Political parties’ candidate selection process varied
according to the strategy and voting base of each political party. The mixed member
apportionment system (MMA) adopted for this election affected the candidate selection
process. Although there were many political parties that which did not expect to win the
election in their constituencies, there was a strong need to try attract votes in order to win
