I’m happy to talk about that further if anybody wants to. So, now we
have a situation where welfare state democracies, which solve the problem of
how do you get both security and choice by trading societies in which there
was growth, continuous growth that allows distribution to take place… What do
we do now if we can’t continue that way? Not to mention how do we deal
with problems like participation demands, disparate of migrants and aging, which
is every society told by democracies faces. I think we can do it if we apply
sufficiency economy philosophy principles to the problem. I think there is a way
out of the dilemma that we face now, and that way out is indicated by what
has been the philosophy that has been developed here in Thailand.
So, I’m not going to talk about sufficiency economy philosophy. What little
I know about it myself because many of you, here, know much more about it
than I do. But I am going to point out to those of you who are not so
acquainted that, two of the principles of the three that of that moderation that
are the essence of the community, two of those principles are..I think ways
that we can start to put in motion a new kind of system which becomes more
democratic in dealing with the limits to growth than what systems we’ve had in
the past.
This is, the slide here is actually, on the left is the direct English
translation as it is usually translated of that poster that I saw on the right hand
side in many, many places in Thailand. It’s not unusual to see this.. and across
the two bottom. It all rests on an idea of knowledge and ethics as it’s often
translated but I’m not going to talk about those. I’m not gonna talk about
reasonableness because that’s a whole area, each society, they can deal with
on their own. But in fact, moderation in immunity, to my knowledge, no country
in the world other than Thailand is talking about those principles, and so, I think
that, that was a great role that Thailand plays not only in struggling with how
to create democracy for yourselves, but how you help the world understand
ways that we can cut back and create the more sustainable democracy and
what you could say also, we’re just playing with words, more democratic
sustainability.
As you know in 1997, His Majesty King Bhumibol is credited for having
0QFOJOH LFZOPUF BEESFTT problems that were affecting the countries like Thailand at the time. And, to my
introduced the idea of sufficiency economy as a solution to the economic
understanding he called for a new development approach, and it was not well
accepted by some people of course, particularly by non-Thais. There has been a
lot of reactions against the idea of sufficiency economy philosophy. And that
reaction was very clearly expressed. In 2007, the UNDP based here in Thailand
produced the country report that highlighted sufficiency economy philosophy and
the people who wrote that and the agency itself got a lot of reactions. People
