of Representatives. In the past, House of Representatives was more a product of
political engineering. But today it’s really a product of free and fair election. We also
have clean, and launch project, on clean and good governance. The establishment of
corruption education committee. And as a result, every year, we got so many people
who did corruption caught by this committee and taken to the court. We also
establish Constitutional Court and other institutions related to democratization.

However, we also have significant obstacles after 1998. Among the others is, in
the past during the authoritarian regime, the state was very powerful. But today, the
state is more or less a weak state. And sometimes, it’s the people who is too
powerful in front of the state. And by distribution of power, because the local leaders
are elected, it also means in many cases, distribution of corruption. We still have very
poor law enforcement. Also, constitutionally in regulation, things are mentioned but in
practice, reality stories are very different. As mentioned by several other speakers
today, Indonesia also is now much more divided, much more polarized as society.
With the emerging of the Islamic populism, especially the phenomena of cluster
society, dissufficience is very, very alarming and creates so many problems. Among
the others is the sectarian and ethnic conflict because Islam is majority, some Muslim
groups take the law into their hands and when they dislike other people or other
groups, they just do whatever they like and in many cases they can escape from law
because of the poor law enforcement.

Indonesia, we also witness the rights of exclusivism. People tend to live
exclusively in a group, even Muslims are building like the Islamic housing complex,
special provision only for Muslims and others. And also intolerance, radicalism and
                     terrorism.

So, in a way, the reformation process has been like, in Indonesia, there is a
very popular dance called poco-poco dance. Move two steps forward, one step
backward, two steps forward, one step backward. After 20 years, we’re not very sure
where we are in terms of achievement, especially the betterment of political reality.
Alright, I think because of the time, I… now let me move to… this is the
illustration of the sectarianism and the Islamic radicalism, and also the problem of the
                     racism.

I think I just jump to the position of women because that’s my focus. Where is
the position of women? As I mentioned, there has been increasingly exclusivism…
Ok, the important question is in this unstable situation where religion in many cases is
used as a political asset, as political commodity, where is the position of women.
In 2000, there was a big fight which mean war between Muslims and Christians in
Eastern Indonesia. Women were a fragile group that become victims in the conflicts.
Learning from what happened in Eastern Indonesia, they’re not passive actors.
As soon as the conflict finished in Eastern Indonesia and women become victims of
the conflicts. Some women initiated interfaith school for young housewife and women ª£¸›²£ª±¡¡™²¥¸h¡¢h¢—µÈ
