RP-T applicants enjoy the following benefits: a) Able
to live and work in Malaysia for up to ten years; b) Able to
change employment without having to renew their employment
passes; c) spouses and children are eligible for passes;
d) spouses can seek employment without needing to have an
employment pass; e) spouses and children are eligible to study
in Malaysia; and f) Dependents over 18 years old, parents and
parents in-law of the approved RP-T applicant are eligible for
a five-year social visit pass (Talent Corp. in World Bank, 2015).
From 2011 to 2015, available numbers from Talent
Corp. show that more than 3,900 RP-Ts had been approved
coming from 64 countries. Above 90 percent posses ten years
global work experience, and over-85 percent have at least
a bachelor’s degree.
But only 6.71 percent of RP-T availees come from
Southeast Asian countries. About 40.85 percent of RP-Ts are
from Western countries while 32.49 percent are from India
(World Bank, 2015). The top five origin countries of RP-Ts are
India, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and the United States
(Talent Corp., 2016).
Most of these talents are in business services and
work for Malaysia-based companies owned by foreigners. The
median salary is some RM210,000 annually (or PhP2.14 million,
at PhP11.522 = RM 1).
