Across all ASEAN countries, engineers had the most

number of newhires (especially since engineering covers civil,
chemical, mechanical, mining, industrial, electronics and electrical
engineers and unclassified engineers). These engineers make

up over-50 percent of the annual newhire skilled professional
deployment in the individual ASEAN countries. An exception

here is Malaysia since nurses and nursing professionals dominate
the newhire skilled worker deployment. Singapore, Malaysia and
Brunei are also notable ASEAN destinations for accountants.

Singapore is also the destination for medical and veterinary
                 doctors and other related professionals.

But the total number of skilled professional deployment
to ASEAN countries pale in comparison to other destination
countries, such as Middle East countries (e.g., engineers) and the

United States and United Kingdom (e.g., nurses). It is also possible
that work in Southeast Asian countries may be a stepping stone

to migrating to countries outside of the ASEAN. But Singapore
and Malaysia are major destination countries for temporary
contract workers. Nevertheless, looking at the stock estimates

of overseas Filipinos, the total number of overseas Filipinos
in Malaysia and Singapore may make these ASEAN states the

only destination countries comparable in size with the leading
destination countries of overseas Filipinos (see Table 3).
