Executive Summary
Indonesia is one of the countries in Southeast Asia that has made
a successful transition to democracy. Previously, Indonesia has
experienced political changes since independence. Sukarno served as
president and attempts to use parliamentary democracy, but without
success until having to change to Guided Democracy, the state of political
unrest that occurred led to the seizure of power by General Suharto and
the establishment of the New Order era. Suharto restricted the area and
number of political parties in parliament. This is until the Asian financial
crisis forced Suharto to step down permanently, closing the legend of
a dictatorial leader who has been in power for 32 years. At the breaking
point of the 1997 crisis, combined with the failure of the dictatorial
government's management, the failure led the people to stand up and
demand reform of the regime towards democracy in which people have
rights and freedoms. Since then there have been calls for reform in many
areas together such as the distribution of power reduction of the role of
the army and the reform of the law relating to the formation of political
parties including the form of the parliament.
