1984 Received a Baker scholarship to do postgraduate work at Cambridge
University (MA in Social and Political Sciences
1988 Studied Tagalog (Filipino) with a Foreign Language and Area Studies
Fellowship at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

1991 Received an M.A. and Ph.D. (with honors) in political science at
Yale University
