He is currently working on or has book manuscripts under review about topics 23 Annual King Prajadhipok’s Institute (KPI) Congress 2021
such as Civil-Military Relations and Democracy in the Third Wave (Oxford University
Press), Democracy, State Capacity and the Governance of COVID-19 in Asia-
Oceania (SUNY Press), Research Handbook Civil-Military Relations (Edward Elgar)

and a research monograph on military reactions to anti-regime protests in
authoritarian regimes.

He is editor-in-chief of the journal Democratization (with Jeffrey Haynes, since
2012) and a member of the Academic Advisory Boards of the Sustainable

Governance Indicators (SGI), the Bertelsmann Transformation-Index (BTI) and the
German Institute for Global Affairs (GIGA, Hamburg). He was a Fellow at the
National Endowment for Democracy in Washington, D.C., and the East West Center

in Honolulu, Hawaii, and has been Visiting Professor at Australian National
University, among others.
