Abstract
This paper presents a study of political activities and electoral behavior in the 2019
Thailand general election in Surat Thani province. The objectives of this study were
(1) to study of political climate, political campaigns, complaints and petitions, political
consciousness, and opinions of people in Surat Thani Province concerning the election;
(2) to study of political movements and political behavior of candidates in Surat Thani
Province; (3) to study roles of state departments, private companies, public organizations,
and other organizations in Surat Thani Province that had a role in the election; (4) to study
behaviors of people and political groups in Surat Thani Province in the context of the election;
(5) to study the use of election campaign resources, especially money, in Surat Thani Province;
(6) to study change in political power, party switching, factors that affected people’s decision-
making and analyze the result of the election in Surat Thani Province. This study was qualitative
research using methods of documentary study, in-depth interview by accidental sampling from
six election zones. Data was collected in three phrases that is before the election, during the
election, and after the election using participant observation method. The research revealed
the following (1) In Surat Thani Province, there are many political parties and candidates
because it had been eight years since the previous election, and because of the mixed member
apportionment election system, however, the election contest was not severe. (2) Election
campaign methods in Surat Thani Province were not different from previous elections except
more use of social media and candidates from different parties did not disparage or blame
each other. (3) State officers in Surat Thani Province were neutral, the provincial election
commission made preparations and communicated about election rules to political parties
before election day and collaborated with other state organizations, private organizations,
and public organizations to make the election transparent. (4) Political behavior of people
and political groups in Surat Thani Province have not been changed from previous elections,
