Group 6: Democracy for a Peaceful Society
A peaceful society is success in democracy. The establishment of
a peaceful society involves several approaches including religious practice,
social communication, education, justice, politics, etc. These approaches
must be governed by democratic principles and processes to lead to a
peaceful society.
Developing countries around the world where democracy is not
firmly established are facing challenges such as exclusion of certain groups
of people, lack of political participation, and poverty. These problems
usually lead to chronic conflict in the society. Without a proper solution,
violence will eventually occur.
Political violence is undesirable but occurs in many countries
around the world. Loss of life and property harms people physically and
mentally. Many countries have been reformed through violence in different
contexts. Many countries focus on the transition to democracy. Success is
driven by many related sectors to overcome obstacles. In Thailand, there
is a need for an appropriate process with a social and political dimension
taking place in the past including violence in the southern border prov-
inces, political foundation, and environmental resources to lead to the
goals of peace and social justice.
One democratic path to a peaceful society is multiculturalism
and diversity. In the pursuit of life, there are similarities and differences
among cultures in coexistence and mutual acceptance. The nature of
mutual acceptance in diversity is toleration. Similarly, the fundamental
value of democracy is political tolerance especially during a political crisis
where groups of people with political differences allow one another to
have the same freedom despite hostility. Toleration focuses on accepting
