Thai Democracy on the Move
Group 5: Democracy with Equity and Social Quality
“Equity”, an important issue in many countries, has received
attention in mainstream development discourse in connection with
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In Thailand, the problem of
inequality has persisted in Thai society for a long time despite an effort
to elevate the image of the country to international acceptance. Equality
is promoted through the Constitution and the SDGs linked to the 20-year
National Strategy. The twelfth National Economic and Social Development
Plan includes reforms expected to provide economic and social security
for various groups by reducing barriers in the development of the country.
In particular, the obstacles that prevent certain groups from enjoying equal
access to public services such as education, public health, politics, and
law enforcement in order to achieve true equality in the country.
The development of social quality includes the following key
elements: socio-economic security, social inclusion, social cohesion, and
social empowerment. Applying these elements will develop each social
dimension equally, such as gender equality, economic equality, and access
to public services. Academics and other sectors can provide knowledge
and motivation to pursue the achievement of equality and social quality,
leading to sustainable democracy.
