Peter Boothroyd, Professor Emeritus in the UBC School of Community and Regional
Planning, has taught, researched, and promoted citizen engagement in a variety of institutional
and community settings.
He organized an inter-jurisdictional task force on Alberta’s urbanization in the
1970s, then headed the Edmonton Social Planning Council and taught social welfare at the
University of Calgary. He went on to initiate participatory planning courses at UBC with and
for First Nations in the 1980s. Building on that experience, he organized and led poverty-
reduction capacity-building projects, funded by the Canadian International Development
Agency, in Thailand, Vietnam, and Brazil.
In recent years, Boothroyd has designed and taught courses on participatory
development at universities in Japan, Brazil, and Canada. He has organized several international
forums to explore opportunities for universities to become more socially engaged. His publications
focus on the democratization of planning in the areas of community development, social
policy, urban transportation, and megaproject impacts.
